Peace in Troubled Times

Several of my friends are police officers around the state. (no, I didn’t meet them professionally! My driving is just fine thank you!) Their stories can make my hair curl and I’m sure that I’ve gotten the edited version. As they say about the bomb squad, they’re running into situations that all the normal people are running from.

Mark Mynheir writes some of the best books available and he has extensive experience as both a narcotics agent and homicide detective. As a psych major and a naturally nosy person, it was somewhat daunting for me to have the shoe on the other foot. Whether you are meeting with Mark at a writers’ conference or sharing a cup of coffee, his training as a interrogator clicks in as he just naturally falls into profiling you. I think that it was after speaking to him about his research for his books that I first recognized my responsibility as a follower of Christ to be interceding for the law enforcement agents around me.

Over the next couple of years, through the Bible Study I attend in a local jail, I’ve had the chance to meet several corrections officers and deputies. Our Law Enforcement Fellowship at my church has expanded my view even more.

This morning I was grateful to have the chance to meet Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti and to hear his heart about how he views his responsibility as the county’s top peace officer. These are stressful times and it is a relief to know that Christ is the Prince of Peace but also to be reminded afresh of our responsibility to be upholding the men and women who “serve and protect”.

In the inimitable words of my late night friend from Hill Street Blues repeats, TV police Sgt. Phil Esterhaus.

“Hey! Let’s be careful out there.”
