My Perfect Job…

Are you fortunate enough to have your perfect job?

Do you think that maybe you do and just don’t know it?

I remember being at a Kry concert on the beach in South Florida and just aching to follow the tour bus. They were great guys but it was more than them. I longed to remain in the center of what was happening. To have the chance to look out on the audience and to know that you are doing exactly what you were made to do is an addictive feeling. I went to say hi to a friend at the concert and she introduced me to her roommate and the weirdest thing happened. I wanted to be the person that she was talking about…travels to China, Peru, Liberia….short term missionary to Moscow…speaker at women’s conferences… then I realized that I was that person and I had to laugh.

Today we talked to Nigel James, road pastor for Third Day and author of Lessons from the Road about his eight years of ministry traveling with the band and I started feeling itchy feet until I realized that within the past six months I’ve been to the Dove Awards, hung out with Brandon Heath, Tenth Avenue North and Newworldson and in a week we’ll be heading to Rock the Universe to see Switchfoot, Third Day, Stellar Kart, Relient K, Newsboys, Skillet, Jeremy Camp, Grits, Group 1 Crew, and New Method…not all bad for a job.

So do you have the perfect job…for you?

Music Builds But Does It Go Mainstream?

This morning on the show, Russ Breimeier from Christianity Today, talked about his impressions of the Music Builds Tour that he caught in Chicago. I know that we really enjoyed the brief taste of the tour when we saw Switchfoot, Third Day, and Jars of Clay at GMA’s in Nashville. Russ’ comments made me sorry that Robert Randolph and the Family weren’t a part of the show that night.

Russ made the point that these bands have had a differing level of mainstream popularity but each has an amazing role in the Body of Christ. For his full thoughts and to sign up for Russ’ e-newsletter, click here.

Russ mentioned that his Pick of the Week was Daylight off of Remedy Drive’s brand-new album. Many of you heard it for the first time on Reach FM. We want to know if you agree with Russ. Take a minute to record your vote on our poll in the next post.

Wrestling Your Kids for Attention

What did you think of what Kathy Peel said on this morning’s show? She said (several times because I think that she could hear the surprise in my voice) that kids shouldn’t have TV’s or computers in their bedrooms.

Her point was that you wouldn’t invite a known predator into your home so why do we let family members splinter off each to their own room to be influenced by an unknown media source?

As you know, my sister has seven children ranging from 2 to almost 18. I love when we’re all together watching a football game or a movie. To look around the living room and see them all sprawled on the couch (especially when the toddler climbs into someone’s lap and just tucks himself in) is a riot.

I’d love to know what you think…take the poll below and we’ll talk about the results tomorrow on the Morning Show.

What Was God Thinking?

This morning, you heard about how special the Reach FM private screening of the movie, FIREPROOF, was not only for me but also for the over 300 pastors and ministry leaders who attended.

What I wasn’t able to put fully into words was what a riot it was to be sitting on the floor in the back of the room (long story but it involved popcorn, a stench so powerful that it was actually visible and my trademarked cooking style which always involves flames) watching a movie on marriage featuring a firefighter.

Most of you have been listening to the show long enough to know that there is a running joke going about me and firefighters. Some friends are firefighters and it has just always struck me as a fairly random job. Between kelly days, living with your co-workers, and that whole “we run into buildings that other people are running out of”  thing…I just find it a source of amusement. Full disclosure forces me to confide that one of the first guys I dated in high school was an EMT who would sit in church and whisper to me a list of pulse points or something equally bizarre. At the height of our relationship, we ended up teaching CPR together…suffice it to say, it was quite the romance.

Will I ever get married? Probably not but a pastor recently chided me on my disinterest in marriage- I think that I am in the right- and half-seriously suggested that I would get more dates if my work voice mail didn’t say, “Sorry, I’m not available.”

What’s the bottom line? I encourage to see the move and to invite your friends. Whether you are single or married, firefighter or firestarter, follower of Christ or seeker, there is probably something in this movie that you will find interesting.

I did.

I think all of us dread change to some extent. New houses, new schools, new dating relationships, new hair styles…the list goes on and on. Perhaps that’s one of the reasons that back to school can be such a difficult time for parents and kids.

I noticed that a lot of my friends were wandering around with their fingers in their ears over the past couple of weeks. It was an unsuccessful attempt to make the days go slower until they dropped their little ones off at kindergarten or even their slightly bigger ones at college.

Sheri and Barbara, both veterans (and survivors) of quite a few family transitions reminded me on the show this morning that although I don’t have children, I’m bound to face some changes in the next couple of days (hours or even minutes). I can mourn the loss inherent in the change or look with expectation at what comes next.

Are you going through a period of upheaval? Are you like my friend with the son who is a senior in high school who is clinging to all the approaching lasts- last football game, last swimming meet, last schedule meeting, last Homecoming Dance, last PTA meeting- and won’t even let her son mention the word “senior” for fear she’ll break into tears? Are you like the father who is looking at his son and wondering if he has left conducting “flat tire drills” until too late?

Know that we’re in this together and that you have a lot of company. Tell me- What have you learned from past transition periods that is helping with this one? Maybe a few of us can take our fingers out of our ears and face the future with a little more excitement.

In the first hour, Susie was our Daily winner for a www.Fishflix.com subscription. She will be entered for the grand prize drawing this Friday for a Labor Day Get-A-Way weekend! Make sure you call tomorrow at 7:20am EST to play.

In November, Florida will be voting on a constitutional amendment to preserve the definition of marriage. John Stemberger, president of the Florida Family Policy Council, talked about what he considers the Biblical view of marriage. To read the amendment for yourself, click here.

Many of us are unsure whether the hurricane damage is inside or outside as Back to School and Tropical Storm Fay are both contributing to interupted routines and can I even say, some chaos. Kathy Peel , the family manager, insists that we can all implement some simple steps to bring order to our lives. Grab a free download of her Exit Checklist and then call us at 1-877-732-2400 or comment here to tell us how it worked.

Luann Yarrow, editor of the Good News in South Florida, talked about social networking as a way to establish friendships outside your normal circles as well as a way to share some of the things that you may be hesitant to confide to your family or friends. Shaun Groves, Carlos Whittaker, and Nate and Tricia are just a few of the people that have opened up their lives through their blogs for which I am incredibly grateful. Do you have a blog? A Facebook? A MySpace? Do you have a blog (or blogs) that you read daily? Do you feel closer to some of your cyberfriends than to the people you are face to face with everyday? We’re just getting started so we would love to have you show us the ropes.

Tomorrow we’re going to be talking about dropping your kids off at school- whether its for the first day of kindergarten or for college. Tune in from 7-9am. And thanks!
